The Ashes legend began in 1882 after Australia defeated England at The Oval for the first time on English soil.

The name comes from a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times after England’s 1882 defeat, declaring the “death” of English cricket and that its ashes would be taken to Australia.

The original Ashes urn is housed in the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) museum at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

The Ashes urn is made of terracotta and is about 11 cm (4.3 inches) tall. It is believed to contain the ashes of a cricket bail, symbolizing "the ashes of English cricket."

The 1932-33 Ashes series is famous for England’s controversial "Bodyline" tactic, which was designed to counter Australia’s batting strength.
