The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

The bomb was known as “Little Boy”, a uranium gun-type bomb that exploded with about thirteen kilotons of force. At the time of the bombing, Hiroshima was home to 280,000-290,000 civilians as well as 43,000 soldiers.

President Harry S. Truman authorized the use of the atomic bomb on Japan. Truman became president after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1945. He was unaware of the project to create the atomic bomb, until he became president.

The atomic bomb used at Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945, was "Fat Man". The bomb was dropped by a USAAF B-29 airplane named "Bockscar", piloted by U.S. Army Air Force Major Charles Sweeney.

The project that developed the atomic bomb was called the Manhattan Project. It was a top-secret U.S. research initiative during World War II, leading to the creation of nuclear weapons.

The military plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima was code-named Enola Gay. It was a B-29 Superfortress bomber piloted by Colonel Paul W. Tibbets on August 6, 1945.

Following World War II, amid the early stages of the Cold War, the United States chose to restart nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean, specifically at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

The Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb, code-named "RDS-1," on August 29, 1949. This successful test marked the beginning of the nuclear arms race during the Cold War.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), signed in 1968, aimed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, promote disarmament, and encourage peaceful uses of nuclear energy globally.

The Soviet Union declared a temporary moratorium on nuclear testing from March 31 to September 30, 1958. The UK became the first nation to permanently end nuclear testing in 1991, preceding the 1996 CTBT.
