Books
In the mid-15th century, a German craftsman named Johannes Gutenberg transformed the history of books and the spread of knowledge. Before his invention, manuscripts were copied by hand, often by monks working patiently in monasteries, and a single book could take months or even years to complete. Gutenberg’s movable-type printing press changed everything. Individual metal letters could be arranged, inked and pressed onto paper to produce identical pages quickly and repeatedly. Around 1455 he printed the famous Gutenberg Bible, demonstrating the extraordinary potential of this new technology. Books could now be produced in large numbers and distributed widely across Europe. This sudden spread of printed knowledge helped fuel the Renaissance and later the scientific revolution. By making books accessible to far more people, Gutenberg helped transform reading from a privilege of the few into a gateway to learning for millions.
